But fret not, I’m here to clear all this up, because th...

Gogoro comes to USA with the 26 pound Eeyo e-bike

Image
They promise "agility over utility." We like e-bikes a lot. We particularly like practical, affordable e-bikes where you can carry tons of stuff and go for miles and miles. And then there is the Gogoro Eeyo. I could go all Eeyore and just whine about it, but it is taking a different approach. Gogoro founder Horace Luke explains: E-bikes don’t all need to be heavy cargo haulers or feel like you’re riding a battery, so we created the Eeyo 1 to be ultralight, quick, responsive, and fun. With its iconic open-frame design and new powerful Eeyo Smartwheel, Eeyo 1 is an adrenaline time machine bringing back the pure joy of riding we all once had. TreeHugger admired the Gogoro approach to scooters, with their swappable batteries, which were great for people who live in apartments and do not have a place to plug in and charge. They never brought these to the USA because the market for scooters is small. But I would have thought that would have been an interesting approach ...

Fix drinking water supplies to reduce ocean plastic

If people don't have to buy drinking water in bottles, a huge quantity of plastic waste will be diverted. The problem of plastic pollution pouring into the world's oceans is a big and daunting one, for which countless solutions have been offered. Improve collection services! Build better recycling facilities! Force companies to redesign single-use packaging! Tell people not to buy it! The advice goes on and on. All of these suggestions are important and play a part in reducing ocean plastic pollution, but there is one idea that could make a bigger dent than the rest:  Fix local drinking water supplies and eliminate the need to buy single-use plastic water bottles.  This could be the most effective way to reduce households' plastic waste, particularly in developing countries. This recommendation was made by the authors of a  new blue paper  that examined strategies for addressing plastic pollution "in the context of an already stressed ocean." It was commissioned b...

Americans still aren't cooking much from scratch

Image
Despite the pandemic, takeout orders have risen. It's time to reclaim lost skills. I've been thinking about takeout lately, and the fact that despite most people being stuck at home with nowhere to go, the number of takeout food orders has actually increased in the United States during the coronavirus pandemic. Here's what the  Huffington Post says  about it: "As the weeks pass, more Americans are picking up food at restaurants, according to Gallup polling. The market research firm CivicScience finds consumers reporting more use of food delivery since the pandemic began. Meanwhile, the online ordering platform GrubHub reported 20 percent more daily orders in April than in the same month last year." This is surprising because it goes against the logical assumption that more time at home would mean more time spent cooking meals from scratch. Indeed, the Huffington Post article offers a lengthy history of takeout food and explains that it didn't catch on among Am...

Will the coronavirus bring back the corner store?

With more people working from home, the little variety store may thrive again. My late father used to point to a little corner store on Dewson Street in Toronto, near where he grew up, and say "there's the store that made me the man I am!" (he was a big guy.) In many parts of the city, corner stores were a key part of our lives. Vancouver planner Sandy James notes that they still could be: Coming out of the pandemic is the need to access goods right in your neighbourhood. The local corner store used to fill this role, with shopkeepers knowing everyone in the neighbourhood, and providing a place where locals can buy milk, cheese, some staples and hear the local goings-on and gossip. They were once necessary in streetcar suburbs when people didn't drive to get their groceries in one big load. A hundred years ago many people didn't have fridges, so you wanted to buy your milk fresh every day close to home. But they also helped define a neigborhood. Kaid Benfield once...

Virus deadlier for UK ethnic minorities: report

Black and Asian people in England are up to 50 per cent more likely to die after being infected with COVID-19, an official study says, reinforcing previous reports which indicated ethnic minority groups were more at risk from the virus. The report by Public Health England (PHE) to examine disparities in how the disease affected people, showed there was a significant disproportionate effect on ethnic minorities, while confirming death tolls among the elderly were far higher. The report comes as a United Nations human rights official highlighted the "devastating impact" of the disease on those communities in Britain and other countries. "Death rates from COVID-19 were higher for Black and Asian ethnic groups when compared to White ethnic groups," the PHE report said. The report said that people of Bangladeshi ethnicity had approximately twice the risk of death than people who were white British. Those who are of Chinese, Indian, Pakistani or other Asian ethnicity, as ...

Prehistoric climate change damaged the ozone layer and led to a mass extinction

Mass extinctions are very important to how life evolved on Earth. For example, when an asteroid hit the Earth 66 million years ago, the resulting dinosaur extinction led mammals to take their place. My colleagues and I have published new research on the mass extinction that took place 359 million years ago at the boundary between the Devonian and Carboniferous geological periods. There have been many previous speculations as to the cause of this event, including volcanic eruptions, asteroid impacts, climate change, sea level changes, wildfires and the rise of the first forests. But we have shown that the extinctions on land at this time may have been caused by a catastrophic thinning of the ozone layer that let in damaging levels of ultra-violet radiation. Something similar contributed to the mass extinctions at the end of the Permian and Triassic periods, but these events were caused by volcanic eruptions. Our research suggests the Earth has a natural internal process triggered by a w...

What to know about breast cancerMedically reviewed by Yamini Ranchod

Breast cancer is the most common invasive cancer in women and the second leading cause of cancer death in women after lung cancer. Advances in screening and treatment for breast cancer have improved survival rates dramatically since 1989. According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), there are more than 3.1 million breast cancer survivors in the United States. The chance of any woman dying from breast cancer is around 1 in 38 (2.6%). The ACS estimate that 268,600 women will receive a diagnosis of invasive breast cancer, and 62,930 people will receive a diagnosis of noninvasive cancer in 2019. In the same year, the ACS report that 41,760 women will die as a result of breast cancer. However, due to advances in treatment, death rates from breast cancer have been decreasing since 1989. Awareness of the symptoms and the need for screening are important ways of reducing the risk. In rare instances, breast cancer can also affect men, but this article will focus on breast cancer in women. Le...
